Law and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

Artificial intelligence systems increasingly decide about people. AIuris examines whether they decide lawfully.

AIuris is an independent expert laboratory working at the intersection of labour law, data protection and AI regulation. It translates the requirements of the AI Act, the GDPR and Polish labour law into standards that can be implemented, audited and defended.

01 · Mission

Reliable expertise where technology meets accountability

AIuris is a law and artificial intelligence laboratory that examines the impact of AI systems on work, fundamental rights, data protection and institutional accountability. The project's purpose is to build reliable expert knowledge, support the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence, and strengthen legal and social oversight of technologies used in employment, administration and business.

AIuris does not act on behalf of any single participant in the labour market. It stands for a standard: transparent documentation, genuine human oversight, and equality of informational arms between employer and workforce. The employer gains compliance it can demonstrate; worker representatives gain knowledge they can act on.

02 · Focus areas

Three fields, one subject: the algorithmic decision about a person

Core

Algorithmic management in employment

AI systems in recruitment and selection, employee evaluation, task allocation, scheduling, performance monitoring, and decisions on promotion or termination of employment. The legal qualification of such systems, the limits of their permissibility, and the effectiveness of labour-law safeguards against decisions made or supported by an algorithm.

Instruments

The AI Act and GDPR in employer practice

The obligations of a deployer of a high-risk system: human oversight, control of input data, event logging, and informing employees and their representatives. Automated decision-making and profiling under the GDPR, impact assessments (DPIA, FRIA), and the overlap of both regimes with the Polish Labour Code's provisions on monitoring and personal rights.

Participation

Worker participation and algorithmic auditing

Worker representatives' right to information about algorithmic systems: information, consultation, and collective bargaining. A proprietary Algorithmic Management Audit methodology (AMA) together with a Minimum Audit Information Package (MAIP), designed as a common language for employers, the workforce and supervisory authorities.

03 · Analyses

Expert commentary on law that is just entering into force

Analysis No. 1 / 2026·AI Act·labour law

Algorithmic management ahead of the deadline. What changes on 2 August 2026

From 2 August 2026, artificial intelligence systems used in employment and recruitment fall under the high-risk regime. The analysis explains which HR tools are covered by Annex III, what obligations rest on the employer as a deployer, and why an algorithmic management audit is the shortest route from statutory provision to demonstrable compliance.

05 · About the laboratory

Academic foundation, practical purpose

and Social Insurance Law, KUL

AIuris is authored and led by Dr hab. Paweł Nowik, Professor at KUL, Head of the Department of Labour Law and Social Insurance at the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. He has run a research programme on artificial intelligence and labour law since 2019, publishing in journals including Computer Law & Security Review and the European Labour Law Journal. He is an expert for the National Science Centre (NCN) and has led research projects on employees' right to algorithmic transparency and the legal limits of algorithmic subordination on digital labour platforms.

AIuris is an extension of that programme: a place where research findings on algorithmic management, worker participation and AI system auditing are translated into materials, training and services useful in practice. The laboratory operates independently of the university and does not represent its position.
